A recent news report came out that stated a Las Vegas priest has stolen a large amount of cash to spend on blackjack games. The priest had a loyal congregation and was much respected in his parish. And he used his power to be able to steal over $650,000 in an eight year span from his church members. The man was able to steal from his church goers because they trusted him. He took advantage of this and each year for eight years he would steal money to continue to play the game of blackjack. The priest was never able to win a ton of money and continued to sink further into debt.
The priest has been caught and now faces up to sixty years in prison. The most astonishing aspect to this case is that the priest’s followers do not want him to be in jail. The prosecutor’s office has received many letters that ask for the priest to be placed on probation. The letters state the priest is ‘willing to repent his sins’ and he will be able to repent if he is free from jail.
Reverend Kovalcin who is from the Catholic Diocese in Las Vegas commented on the priest by stating: “He must repair the damage he has caused and heal the people he has hurt. He cannot do that from a prison confinement.” However, the prosecutor’s office does not share these views and will be holding on to the jail time.
