The Christchurch Casino is located in New Zealand and they are now back in action after they suffered action from an earthquake this past February. The casino is now reopened for visitors to be able to enjoy their favorite games such as blackjack, craps and poker. The casino was a big draw for visitors to the area and when it shut down due to damage, players had nowhere to go. When the casino was damaged by the earthquake almost 500 people were without a job. They had to choose if they wanted to take unpaid leave or redundancy. Over half of the employees decided to stay on and are now glad they can get back to dealing blackjack and poker.
The casino had hundreds of people inside when the earthquake hit but thankfully no one was killed. The structure came away undamaged but there was much to cleanup which caused the casino to close. And with the casinos closed, many of the surrounding businesses suffered losses as well. Many of the nearby businesses rely on the clientele of the casino to frequent their businesses.
Across the street from the casino is the Procope coffee house. This business is a café during the daytime hours and a nightclub once it gets late in the evening. The manager of the café, Jason Harris, says he is happy that the casino is reopening. He commented: “It just sends a signal that another area of the central business district is open…and that’s got to be a good thing.” It is also good for the dealers and other casino workers as now they can return to work.
