Gregory Meeks is a representative for the Queens area of New York State and he has been in the news as of late for failing to report a $3,500 blackjack win. It has been two years since Meeks earned the win and it did not surface until the November 17th amendment to the financial disclosure forms were released. In the amendment it simply reads: ‘in 2008, I had gambling winnings of approximately $3,500’. Meeks stated to the Daily News that he won the money while in Las Vegas at the blackjack tables but he only reported the money once lawyers told him he should do so.
After the lawyers reviewed his financial disclosure requirements they told him that anything that he earned from gambling should be reported. Meeks stated that he knew that he had won some money in Vegas and he needed to report it and didn’t understand why it was such a big deal.
The congressman has found himself deep in financial woes as he is the subject of an ongoing federal corruption probe which he is under investigation for a $40,000 loan that he says he got from a Queens businessman back in 2007.
Meeks did not disclose the loan or make payments on the loan for almost four years. Just days after the FBI began their investigation into the loan, Meeks made arrangements to repay the loan. Overall the government official financial background is being investigated and this includes his gambling earnings as well as the supposed loan.
