A documentary was recently released that has many in the gambling community and industry talking. Holy Rollers: The True Story of Card Counting Christians has released and follows a small group of Christian church goers, including pastors, who claim they see God’s glory when they take money from the casinos during blackjack games.
The group earns money at the casinos by counting cards during blackjack games. The film makes it seem very simple but it is not. The group of Seattle Christians have become very successfully by hitting casinos and counting the blackjack cards.
The group has named themselves the Church Team and they trust each other with six figure amounts. they have said it is their mission to throw themselves into the den of iniquity and fatten their bankrolls.co-founder of the team, Ben Crawford, stated that he began counting cards after he read a book titled: How to make $100,000 a Year Gambling for a Living. Crawford stated: “I had no dreams
of it going big (the film). I thought it’d be a fun summer. I never thought it would become a business.”
The team members do not believe that there is a contradiction between their faith in God and their goal of earning big money. The group has won and lost as much as $40,000 in one day. The group has been challenged as to their motives by friends and family and they stated that their gaming is work, not gambling.
The team members each play the blackjack games and then they will pool their losses and gains. Every time they earn $100,000, everyone would get an equal share of the winnings. Colin Jones is a pastor that is part of the team and acts as the leader. Jones commented: “the opportunity to fly to Vegas for two or three days and make enough to live for a month’ is great because he can ‘spend the rest of the month shepherding’ new members of the church.
