Miami, Florida is a hot destination for many different types of travelers but it will soon add one more type to the list: gamblers! A large company has just announced they have plans to build a large resort and gaming facility in Miami on the Biscayne Bay. Genting Malaysia Berhad is a multibillion dollar company that is planning on spending $3 billion on a new resort in Miami called Resorts World Miami. The new resort will sit on 13.9 acres of land and will be located where the Miami Herald building is now.
The plan for the casino is to have over five thousand hotel rooms which will be spread over four hotel towers and two condos. There will also be a convention center, shopping space, fifty restaurants and nightclubs. The resort will also have a third and fourth floor which will consist of a casino.
Genting will have to fight to be able to get the rights for a full fledged casino. The state of Florida already offers slots, poker and blackjack but they are only available through the Seminole Tribe. Genting wants to be able to offer everything including craps and roulette.
The state of Florida must approve the plan that was created by Genting as well as approve a destination casino. John Lockwood is a gaming law expert in Tallahassee, Florida and he represents several who have their hand in the gambling industry and he commented on the subject of the Genting proposal by stating:
“The Genting proposal creates a unique policy decision for state lawmakers that will require balance between generating substantial state revenue and creating a competitive environment where the destination casinos, pari-mutuel facilities and Seminole tribe can prosper.
