The Indiana Supreme Court recently made a decision in favor of the casinos in the state. Casinos in the state now have the right to ban those who try to count cards during games such as blackjack. This case has been ongoing for a long time and the final ruling is now for the casinos. The case that went to the Supreme Court was brought on by Thomas Donovan. Donovan sued the Grand Victoria Casino and Resort after he was banned from their blackjack tables. This happened by in 2006 and the casino won a suit in the county court. The case then went to the state appeals court and that decision was reversed. This is what made the case go to the Supreme Court.
The case drew major attention and by the end of the trial the court ruled 3-1 in favor of the casinos. Justice Frank Sullivan Jr. commented that gambling was legalized to promote tourism and the economy and it was not legalized not to insure maximum participation by casino patrons.
Sullivan Jr. went on to state: “It seems to us just as likely—if not more so—that discouraging card counting enhances a casino’s financial success and directly furthers the legislature’s express objective of promoting tourism and assisting economic development.”
So now if anyone tries to use a card counting device or other methods to count cards at an Indiana casino will now be banned from that casino. Those who use card counting play blackjack will not be happy about this ruling but casinos are surely pleased with the Supreme Court’s decision.
