The Edmonton Catholic School District in Alberta, Canada uses casino fundraisers to raise money for the schools in their district. The Archbishop Richard Smith of Edmonton is over the schools and he has announced the schools can no longer run casino fundraisers. The schools would hold the fundraisers and offer such games as blackjack and bingo so players could come and enjoy the games and raise money for the schools. The money raised is used to help education programs at the schools.
The province is funded in full by the school district and the money is used for projects that the funds provided by Alberta will not help with. These items would include field trips and charity meal programs. Smith has stated that the school system will no longer be able to host the casino nights after October 1st. the school has already been expecting the funds so now they are in serious trouble.
On mother in the school system commented in the Edmonton Journal that it has been her experience that the casino nights have been easy money makers for the school and it is much easier to host the fund raisers than try to have hundreds of bake sales to make money.
The Archbishop has stated he will be willing to work with the schools to create some
type of timeline that will work with the ban. However many are looking at how much power the archbishop has over the school. What we do know is the Archbishop has the right to take away the Catholic school title from the school so parents and school officials want to work with him so they can keep that title.
