Jerry Powell age sixty five finally decided to pay his debt of over $2.2 million to the casinos he owes. Powell is an executive at Plum TV and he managed to lose money at a Las Vegas, Atlantic City and Connecticut. At first Powell refused to pay his debts which he earned by playing blackjack, but now he has to pay up after the court ruled in the casinos favor. Powell stated he was drunk when he was at the casinos and they took advantage of this to give him a large credit advance. However the Connecticut state court ruled that Powel owes the money and ordered him to pay up.
It was hard for Powell to prove his point in court in Connecticut because he is also being sued by the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas and the Taj Mahal Casino in Atlantic City. The judge saw the amount of cash that Powel owed and decided it was time for the blackjack gambler to pay up.
Owing casinos is no strange occurrence for Powel. Back in 1977 to 1984 he owned money on thirteen different occasions and all of it was due to a drug addiction. Powel supposedly got over his drug addiction but now it seems it may be back or something else is causing Powel to visit casinos and write checks at a rapid rate.
Powell has now paid the debt he owes the casinos and he commented in the AP on the subject by stating: “It was a chapter. It was closed. Everybody’s paid, and I’m really happy about it.” It will be interesting to see if this is the last time Powell gets in trouble for writing bad checks to casinos or if he will be at it again in the future.
