The Borgata casino in Atlantic City got in trouble recently when a minor was found gambling at their casino. The Casino Control Commission of the state of New Jersey fined the casino $40,000 this week since they allowed a minor to gamble on the casino floor. This is the third time the casino has been in trouble for underage gambling in the past two years. However this is not the largest fine the casino has paid. At one point they had to shell out over $100,000 in penalties for underage gambling.
Despite past occurrences, the commission found that the casino had taken measures to keep those who are underage from gambling at their casino so that explains the lesser fine. One example of a change at the casino is the offer to employees. Whenever an employee identifies an underage gambler they are rewarded with a $50 bonus. The casino also reported tens of thousands of ID checks on their casino floor last year.
This most recent fine was given in regards to an instance back in February. A male, age 18, was able to purchase $60 in chips and then played roulette, twenty four rounds exactly. He earned a $100 profit but was identified as a minor once he tried to cash out.
The casino also had a twenty year old female who came to the casino and played Spanish Blackjack for an extended period of time. This player was not found out about at the casino until she switched tables. Once employees found out the players were underage they turned them over to the proper authorities. Linda Kasserkert the chairwoman for the commission commented: “hopefully Borgata continues to take measures that prevent this from happening in the future.
